Has it really only been a year? Yes, it has. And what a year it was. This time last year, the Blood Ballet Cabaret were preparing for their first ever show at Barfly during the Infringement Festival. Fast forward twelve months and they now have nine shows under their collective garter belts (plus two out-of-town gigs) and are preparing for their Freshman Finale.
FTB first caught up with the BBC three shows in when they performed for the first time at Le Belmont, then again at their Rememberance Day show, noting the progress they had made. The next few shows (Holiday, Sci-Fi and Oscars) must have been a period of continuous growth for the troupe itself, the group’s style and its audience because by the time we caught up with them again for the Kids show, things seemed to really be in full swing.
Now, after having gone Naughtical both in Montreal and Halifax, the troupe is ready for a season sendoff (and presumably a bit of rest over the summer). For this, they’re going back to high school. They promise “…performances depicting academic stereotypes of all kinds, delivered to you in the customary Blood Ballet fashion” which generally means a considerably sexy, somewhat raunchy and very creative adherence to the show’s theme. Or, as the troupe puts things, it “will surely bring the high school cliché to a whole other level.”
To get things going early, BBC members have been posting embarrassing photos from their high school days on the event’s Facebook page. Yes, I know Facebook is already a place chock full of embarrassing photos from reckless youth, but this is a clever initiative and a good way to build excitement for the show. Not that excitement isn’t built already.
Why not kick off summer in style by hanging out with your classmates from the fall and winter one more time. Let’s all get hot for teacher and/or students this Sunday.
The Blood Ballet Cabaret Freshman Finale is Sunday, June 5 at 8:30pm, doors 8pm @Le Belmont, 4483 boul St-Laurent. $10 at the door
