Playing shows this week in Montreal, we have a singer and violinist from Utah, a Norwegian singer/songwriter/pianist, rockers from Brooklyn and a punk-fueled house party that is a Montreal/Hamilton/Cape Breton collaboration. Let’s get started…
Hannah Epperson + St. Lawrence Warehouse Company + Nova + Omhouse
On Thursday Casa Del Popolo will be hosting a jam packed night of music headlined by Hannah Epperson, a violinist and singer who blends traditional folk styles with contemporary sensibilities into a richly layered tapestry of sound. Her songs seem to build on top of themselves and grow as they progress giving the music a very organic flow and rhythm.
Having just released her debut album Upsweep in September, Hannah has taken to the road in support and to give her fans the treat of hearing these interesting tunes done in a live setting. Joining her will be a trio of performers, St. Lawrence Warehouse Company, Nova and Omhouse making this a full evening experience as well as very student friendly considering tickets are only about twelve bucks.

Aurora + Dan Croll
For those who didn’t get enough this weekend, next Monday Norwegian singer/songwriter/pianist Aurora takes her fall tour of North America to Théâtre Corona with the support of Dan Croll. Her first full length album All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend was released last March and has been picking up steam ever since.
Aside from the immediately interesting album title, what you get is a series of tracks that are one part indie-dance-pop and one part piano driven ballad showing the vast range of this young songwriters already impressive talent. With invites to festival circuits and late night talk shows starting to come Aurora’s way this might be a “remember when” moment where you got to see a big talent in a relatively small venue.

DIIV
On Saturday you can head over to Théâtre Fairmount where Brooklyn based rockers DIIV will be bringing their post-punk/shoegaze brand of indie rock out on full display. With soaring space rock inspired guitar melodies a driving rhythm section and catchy vocals these guys know how to craft some memorable tunes.

Heroin Hayride + Frankie & Jimmy
It seems a little odd to preview a house party but if it’s got live music, good bands, beer, wine, food and it’s all at a reasonable price then why not! Saturday night local talents The Heroin Hayride will be teaming up with Hamilton’s own Frankie & Jimmy for evening of foot stomping blues and country that is the epitome of a DIY type of music show.
The organizers would like to point out that they have neighbours so the show will start promptly at 9pm and end by midnight. Those of you familiar with a “Montreal 9” (a.k.a the I’m so cool because I showed up late) might want to rethink your plan this time around.
